Interview

What’s it like to race an XR1200 spec class bike and how does the racing compare to your other events?
I’m still adjusting to the extra weight, but the bike is surprisingly fun to ride. I was really amazed by the brakes. The chassis takes some getting used to, and of course, there is a lot of engine braking, compared to my two-stroke race bikes.

What made you decide to race the Vance & Hines XR1200 Series?
I’ve been following the series since it started and have been really intrigued. The XR1200 is a great looking bike. I saw one come up for sale and couldn’t resist. I’m glad I jumped in.

What’s your typical pre-race meal?
Red Bull

What is your pre-race OCD behavior?
Checking my front brake pads and caliper bolts.

What is one of your best racing memories?
Railing through turn 8 at Willow Springs on a TZ250 pinned in 6th gear. There’s nothing like it.

What motivated you to get started racing?
I used to steal my dad’s Honda CT90 when I was 12. After many street crashes, I gave racing a try back in the mid 80s aboard a Yamaha RZ350 and have been hooked ever since.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional motorcycle racer?
Adding to my motorcycle collection

What else is in your garage?
A couple Ford F150s, a Porsche 993 Cabriolet C4, and my motorcycle collection.

Any advice to the readers dreaming to turn pro?
Train, do laps and work on sponsorship. You CAN make it happen.

How many hours a week are you on Facebook?
Probably quite a bit. Its a great way to keep in touch with friends & family, and keep my cronies updated on my racing adventures.

What are your favorite magazines and websites?
Roadracingworld.com , Soup, Crash.net, PlanetF1.com and MotoList.com.

Who are your heros?
The 80s-90s 500 GP racers, hands down. And my wife for letting me do this.

Beach or mountains?
Both please! I travel between Monarch Beach, CA and Montana every few weeks all year long.

iPhone , Blackberry or Android?
iPhone 4S

Mac or PC?
Mac

Most frustrating challenge?
Since I’m not a spring chicken any longer, keeping in good shape is challenging.
